On here are tips and videos which will benefit you.

It is not a full course, just elements that most learners struggle with.

Meeting traffic on narrow roads.

Key points.

You should leave about an open car door width or think of a cycle lane by the side of the parked vehicles.

If you need to get closer then HALF the speed you are doing.

DO NOT stare at an oncoming car, look at how near you are to the parked car as well as the car coming towards you.

Less space less speed, STOP if necessary.

This is an experienced instructor, as a learner how could you do it better.

Note the gap on the left, she could have come to a stop slighly pulled in to the gap.

Or if there was no gap, come to a stop, observe the space between her and the parked cars, and then creep forward and get closer to the parked cars.

The first two minutes of this video explains the principle of not catching the kerb with the back wheels

Note full obervations, do not stare at one point, check the front of the car won’t hit anything as well as the back

IF ITS NOT SAFE TO GO , SLOW QUICKLY TO A CRAWL OR STOP!

This video is a basic guide but NOT the way i teach.

The main point on why  people fail on this is because they rush and don’t do both blind spot checks  and/or look out the back window before reversing.

You MUST turn around and look out the back window BEFORE you reverse in ANY reversing manoeuvre.

Do constant observations over left, and right shouldes.

Steps to take

  1. approach with the indicator on to stop parallel with the car
  2. Stop when your mirrors are anywhere between the B pillar and the cars mirrors but about central if you can
  3. Full lock left, into reverse, look out back window and both blind spots.
  4. If any other cars are coming wait until you can establish if they want to squeeze past you or if they are waiting for you.
  5. Reverse until the first door handle is only just touching the kerb – don not go over, if you do , blind spot check and creep forward a bit.
  6. Straighten wheels.
  7. Go back until next door handle just touches kerb and stop
  8. Full right lock, check out back window and blind spots and reverse until car is just straight,
  9. Straighten wheels and go back a little more.
  10. Remember wnen pulling out to put full right lock on!

In my car use the blind spot mirrors. Do not adjust the mirrors.

On your test you will get the option of choosing a Bay of your choice.

When you drive out of the bay, ensure your shoulder/B pillar is on the point of being out of the bay and then put full lock on.

Don’t over thing reversing, if you get confused, stop, don’t panic and think this phrase.

If I want the rear of the car to go to the left, steer to the left.

If i want the rear end of the car to go to the right, steer to the right.

If you are not sure which way you wheels are pointing, creep the car slightly to see if it goes straight or slightly left or slightly right.

Forward Bay park.

When i am teaching the reference point is generally the point of the mirrors to line up, but maybe top or bottom, a full right lock and then slight adjustments if required.

Remember that you have to reverse out, when the mirrors are just coming out of the bay, apply full lock.

Again remember if you want the rear of the car to go left, steer left.

Roundabouts, watch the following videos for help with approaches, positions and blockers.

Constant observations on approach and lane discipline is essential!

Traffic Lights

Watch the video to see about progressing.

As a learner, if two cars are ahead of you in the centre waiting to turn right, wait at the stop line.

If the first or both cars go through a gap AND the light is on green, then progress to the middle to turn .

Yellow boxes are there to say “If the traffic to the right is backed up and you CANNOT clear the junction when you turn right DO NOT enter the box.

This really applies even if there is a yellow box, if you get stuck in the middle of the lights because you cannot complete the turn because of traffic back log (OR even if going ahead or left) do not cross the Stop line.
